Whilst in Tokyo, I used the time in Akihabara to go hunting for a Transformers Masterpiece MP-5 – Megatron.
Yes, this was a required geek purchase – no apologies here!
This figure, which transforms into a slightly oversized Walther P-38, is specifically designed to look as close to the cartoon version (in robot mode) as is possible, given the physical restrictions imposed by the shape of the gun form.
The original toy from the 80s looked absolutely ridiculous in robot mode; this version is the most realistic rendition of Megatron’s robot form ever created.
I’ve only a few minor quibbles; one is that his scope (on the right arm) is way too big when it is equipped in robot mode (it’s scaled for hand gun mode). It would have been nice for Takara to include a smaller scope, scaled for the figure’s robot mode.
The figure is also quite brittle, joins are very tough and overall the figure is a bit fragile, I’m not game to attempt the very complex transformation process because I’m sure I’ll end up breaking some part of it’s brittle joints. That’s OK because I don’t think the gun mode (being oversized) is worth the effort, I have an original 1984 version which looks much, much better (if not identical, but smaller and to scale) which includes the silencer and stock (not included in the masterpiece kit).
Alike the MP-01 (Optimus Prime), I think that this kit is really just for the robot mode, and I’m likely only going to collect MP-01 & MP-05 unless Takara makes their future figures at least partially out of metal. These plastic figures are just not worth the price, and break too easily. However, I do strongly recommend this and the MP-01 figure.
