Our trip commenced on a Saturday (4th October) and we got away late morning.
We had a familiar southerly journey through Narooma and down to Bega, where we stopped for lunch and I bought some records at Sugar Sounds (on Carp St). There’s sushi outside the Woolworths now, so that’s been augmenting some of the lunch options as a lot of the non-fast food options have started to disappear from Bega.
Once we left, around 2pm, we made good time to the border and across into east Gippsland. Once you’re past Eden it does start to get a little dull. We had Austin fall asleep not far from Cann River (where the Monaro highway joins) and he didn’t wake until about a half hour north east of our initial destination: Lakes Entrance.
Cann River would have been an uneventful stop for fuel, except that it almost wasn’t. A car existing the fuel station to the west of the major roundabout decided to use the left hand lane and drove towards us while we were on the roundabout itself. Thankfully they turned left and exited, but it was an unwanted surprise. Thankfully, no further incidents were on the cards.
We rolled into town around 5pm which was remarkably close to what I’d aimed for. We checked in and took up residence in a three bedroom villa, our base for the next two days. Family friend Matthew joined us (from Canberra) and we started the process of foraging for dinner.
We were out of luck for a few places, and some others turned out not only to not be restaurants (i.e. food vans), but also not trading. We ended up ordering pizza and heading back to the Big 4. I ran back to get the car to spare the extended family a walk with hot food, but tripped on the uneven sidewalk near the police station and made a mess of both palms and my right leg. Not the best start.
